Saoirse Una Ronan (/ˈsɜːrʃə ˈruːnən/; born 12 April 1994) is an Irish actress. She made her film debut at the age of 13 in I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007), and received critical acclaim for her performance in the 2007 film Atonement, which earned her a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Early life and career


Ronan was born in The Bronx, New York City, to Irish parents, Monica and Paul Ronan. Her father is an actor, and her mother is a former actress. Ronan has two older brothers, Paul and Ronan. She moved to Ireland with her family when she was three years old and grew up in Carlow. Ronan attended Loreto College in Carlow and studied drama at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin.

Ronan began her acting career at the age of nine, appearing in the Irish television series The Clinic. She made her film debut in 2007 in I Could Never Be Your Woman, playing the daughter of Michelle Williams' character. Ronan received critical acclaim for her performance in the 2007 film Atonement, which earned her a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She has since starred in a number of films, including The Lovely Bones (2009), Hanna (2011), Byzantium (2012), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Brooklyn (2015), Lady Bird (2017), and Little Women (2019).

Ronan is in a relationship with actor Jack Lowden. She is a supporter of the Irish language and culture, and is a patron of the Irish Film & Television Academy. Ronan is also a supporter of LGBTQ rights and has spoken out against homophobia and transphobia.
