You may be wondering why Harmony Day is celebrated on March 21st.
The date was chosen to coincide with the United Nations
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is also held on March 21st. This day was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1966 to mark the anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa. On that day in 1960, 69 unarmed black South Africans were killed by police during a peaceful protest against apartheid. The UN designated March 21st as a day to remember the victims of racism and to promote racial harmony.
