KEyskills Practice

To calculate means to obtain a result by reckoning.

There are four operations, which may be used in a calculation.  These are:

¨    addition

¨    subtraction

¨    division

¨    multiplication

CALCULATING COSTS

In some calculations more than one operation may be used.

Example 1

An artist buys 9 paintbrushes costing 56p each.

How much change will be received from a £10 note?

Cost of paintbrushes = 9 x 56p

                                = £5×04

    Amount of change = £10 - £5×04

                                   = £4×96

Some calculations for you to try:

1.     An office buys 2 computers for£799(including VAT) and a printer costing £249.  The budget for this expenditure is £200.  How much money remains after the purchase?

2.     A theatre can seat 564 people in the stalls, 228 in the circle, and 196 in the balcony.

a)    How many people can the theatre seat in total?

Seats in the stalls cost £24×50, circle seats cost £27×00 and balcony seats cost £19×50

b)    How much will the theatre take if it has a full house?

3.     A paediatric unit buys packs of nappies each containing 20 nappies for £6×95 per pack.

a)    How much will 50 packs cost?

b)    How much change will be received from £400?

A company offers to supply the unit with nappies.  50 packs will cost £500, each pack contains 30 nappies.

c)     Should the paediatric unit change supplier?

d)    Produce calculations to support your answer.
