Jim Montgomery




Jim Montgomery (born August 19, 1979) is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman and current coach. He is the head coach of the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL).
Montgomery played four seasons of college hockey with the Maine Black Bears, where he was a two-time All-American and the Hockey East Player of the Year in 2003. He was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the third round, 85th overall, of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.
Montgomery made his NHL debut with the Sharks in 2003–04 and played in 54 games over the next three seasons. He was traded to the Dallas Stars in 2006 and played in 19 games for them before being claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2007.
Montgomery played in 115 games for the Flyers over the next three seasons before being traded to the St. Louis Blues in 2010. He played in 29 games for the Blues before being claimed off waivers by the Montreal Canadiens in 2011.
Montgomery played in 10 games for the Canadiens before being claimed off waivers by the Florida Panthers in 2012. He played in 14 games for the Panthers before being claimed off waivers by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013.
Montgomery played in 23 games for the Blackhawks before being claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Sabres in 2014. He played in 29 games for the Sabres before being claimed off waivers by the Arizona Coyotes in 2015.
Montgomery played in 25 games for the Coyotes before being claimed off waivers by the New York Islanders in 2016. He played in 23 games for the Islanders before being claimed off waivers by the New Jersey Devils in 2017.
Montgomery retired from playing in 2017 after 14 seasons in the NHL. He had 11 goals and 41 assists for 52 points in 322 career NHL games.
After retiring from playing, Montgomery became an assistant coach with the St. Louis Blues. He was promoted to head coach in 2019 and led the Blues to the Stanley Cup Finals in his first season.
Montgomery was fired by the Blues in 2022 and was hired as the head coach of the Boston Bruins in 2023.
Montgomery is a two-time Stanley Cup champion as a player with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015.
