How UCLA Became My Campus: A Personal Journey

A Student's Story
Stepping onto the sprawling campus of UCLA, I felt a surge of excitement and trepidation. As an aspiring college student, I had been eagerly awaiting this moment, but now that it was here, I couldn't help but wonder if I had made the right choice.
Growing up in a small town, I had always been drawn to the idea of attending a large university. I yearned for the vibrant atmosphere, the diversity of perspectives, and the endless opportunities that such an institution could offer. UCLA, with its reputation for academic excellence and its location in the heart of Los Angeles, seemed like a perfect fit.
Yet, as I navigated the bustling campus for the first time, I couldn't shake the feeling of being an outsider. The students seemed so confident and sophisticated, while I felt like a clueless freshman lost in a maze.
Finding My Niche
As I timidly attended classes and joined clubs, I gradually started to find my place on campus. I discovered a passion for writing in a journalism class and found a supportive community in the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition (APIC). With each step I took, my confidence grew.
One unforgettable experience was meeting Dr. Maya Angelo, who visited campus during my sophomore year. As she spoke about her journey as a writer and activist, her words resonated deeply within me. I realized that UCLA was not just a place of learning, but also a catalyst for personal growth and social change.
Experiential Education
Beyond the classroom, UCLA offered me countless opportunities for experiential learning. I interned at a local museum, participated in research projects, and studied abroad in Spain. These experiences not only expanded my knowledge but also shaped my perspectives and prepared me for the future.
I particularly cherish the memories I made with my fellow students. We spent countless hours studying together in the Powell Library, cheering on the Bruins at football games, and exploring the city of Los Angeles. It was through these shared experiences that I formed lifelong friendships.
A Transformative Journey
My journey at UCLA was not without its challenges. There were moments of self-doubt and homesickness. But through it all, I had the unwavering support of professors, mentors, and classmates who believed in me.
Today, as I reflect on my time at UCLA, I am filled with gratitude. It was here that I discovered my passions, developed my skills, and forged connections that will last a lifetime. UCLA has transformed me into the person I am today, and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to have called this campus my home.

To all the aspiring college students out there, I urge you to embrace the unknown and seek out a university that is not just right for your academic aspirations but also for your personal growth. UCLA has been an incredible journey for me, and I believe it can be for you too.
As the sun sets over Westwood, casting a golden glow on the campus, I can't help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. UCLA has become more than just a school to me.
