The Pros and Cons of Using Different Types of Gun Magazines: Which Option is Best for Your Needs?

Gun magazines are a very important part of any firearm. You can say that it is the backbone of a gun and without it there will be no place to hold and load the ammo. All repeating guns have magazines where the ammo is stored before it is loaded to fire.

This piece of the firearm can be removable or fixed. It works in a very simple way, you work the action, the cartridge is picked up from the magazine and settled in the chamber from where it fires off.

There are several different types of CA legal mags and each one has its own set of pros and cons. The correct way of choosing the right gun magazine for your usage is by understanding your requirements  and needs.

The Golden State of America has the most stringent and unabashed gun laws as compared to any other state. The gun laws have altered the manufacturing of firearms and have been a source of inspiration for the other states to follow suit.

The main thing that the state of California wants to curb or put a cap on is the amount of rounds allowed in any firearm and any given point. In this article, I will tell you about the different kinds of magazines, its types and the pros and cons so that you can ultimately decide which is the best option for your needs.

California Legal Mags- Types

There are basically two types of magazines-

Detachable magazine- this magazine allows you to have extra ammo on hand whenever the first round is fully used. These types of magazines feed the gun countless times as you just have to remove the old one and insert the filled one and you are equipped to fire again in a far less time.

Fixed Magazine- on the other hand, a fixed magazine means that you have to manually remove the used ammo to be removed from the gun and new ammo be inserted in the firearm. This process takes time and requires efficiency. The tubular, hinged floor plate and revolving are all kinds of fixed magazines.

Operation in Different Firearms

Detachable magazines can be found in rifles for sale in California, California legal handguns and even California shotguns. Most of these magazines use a clip to speed up the reloading process dramatically. Just like magazines you can also find clips in mainly two types, a stripper clip and an En bloc clip. The latter type of clip the entire clip and cartridges are loaded into the firearm. The clip automatically ejects the firearm after the last cartridge is fired. But the catch is that with this system if the clip isn’t loaded properly the firearm will not function properly.

The former type of clip is a tool that holds the cartridges and allows you to swiftly insert it in the magazine, be it detachable or fixed. It is basically stripped of all ammo when inserted but once it's there you can easily load the cartridges. When it comes to handguns like revolvers, the wheel in the firearm is considered as its magazine as that is the part that holds the cartridges and where they are loaded.

Different Kinds of Gun Magazines and Their Pros and Cons

1.Pan Style Gun Magazine

A pan style magazine is quite different and unique from the regular singular style magazine. This kind of magazine is usually mounted at the top of the firearm and is shaped like a circular disc or a pan.

The cartridges are stored in this magazine in a perpendicular to the axis of rotation formation. The noticeable pro of this style of magazine is its large capacity which allows you to shoot for a long time without reloads. The cons of this style are its big size, weight, high cost of production and just an unflattering appearance of the gun.

2.Box Style Gun Magazine

The box magazine is your most known and used style of CA legal mags. This is a detachable magazine carrying 10-30 rounds. It has a rectangular shape in which the ammo is loaded column wise.

With these styles of magazines, the loading and unloading time of magazines in the firearm will be reduced significantly. The con is that this magazine is a bit bulky especially if you are carrying a lot of these.

2.Drum Style Gun Magazine

The drum style magazine is shaped like a cylinder and has the ability to hold cartridges anywhere between 50-100 rounds. The pros of this style of magazine is that they are very reliable and do not malfunction easily.

But on the other hand these magazines are difficult to load and unload. Drum magazine is also not compatible with all types of firearms. These are bulky, expensive and not very usable.

Summary

In order to make the correct decision about choosing the right gun magazine, you need to be sure of the usage or requirement of it in your life. You may need a drum style magazine if you need to fire a lot of rounds at one time like for training or shooting exercises. You may find the box magazine better when hunting or defending and you can also use pan style magazine when needing bigger rounds for recreational shooting.
