Gary Rowett

Even with the success of other managers in recent years, Gary Rowett remains one of the most underrated managers in English football. From his early days at Burton Albion, Rowett has consistently overachieved with the teams he has managed.
Rowett was born in Birmingham in 1974 and started his playing career at Cambridge United. He went on to play for a number of clubs, including Oxford United, Bristol City and Birmingham City. He was a tough-tackling defender who was known for his leadership qualities.
After retiring from playing in 2009, Rowett moved into coaching. He started out as a youth coach at Birmingham City before being appointed manager of Burton Albion in 2012. Burton were then playing in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. Rowett led the club to promotion to League One in 2015 and then to the Championship in 2016.
Rowett left Burton in 2017 to take over at Birmingham City. He led the club to a 9th-place finish in the Championship in his first season and then to a 10th-place finish in his second season. He was sacked in December 2019 after a run of poor results.
Rowett was appointed manager of Stoke City in January 2020. He led the club to a 15th-place finish in the Championship in his first season. In his second season, the club finished 14th. He was sacked in November 2022 after a poor start to the 2022/23 season.
