Donald Payne Jr.




Donald Payne Jr. is the son of the late Donald M. Payne, a prominent civil rights leader and longtime U.S. Congressman. Donald Jr. followed in his father's footsteps, entering politics and serving as a U.S. Representative for New Jersey's 10th Congressional District since 2013.
Payne Jr. was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1959. He attended Kean University and Rutgers University before earning his law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law. He worked as an attorney before entering politics.
In 2012, Payne Jr. ran for Congress and won the Democratic nomination. He went on to defeat the Republican incumbent in the general election. Payne Jr. is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Armed Services Committee. He is also a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Payne Jr. is a strong advocate for social justice and economic equality. He has worked to expand access to affordable healthcare and education, and he has fought to protect the rights of immigrants and the LGBTQ community. Payne Jr. is also a strong supporter of labor unions and working families.

Payne Jr. is married and has two children. He is a practicing Christian and a member of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Newark.
